Xie Liangmin, Minister of legal affairs of the National Federation of trade unions, said recently that there were about 400000 cases of labour disputes handled in various sectors of China last year, of which wage disputes ranked first.

According to Xie Liangmin, from the second half of 2008, the number of labor disputes in China increased rapidly, and the incidence began to decline from the second half of last year, which is mainly related to the economic environment.
In the ratio of labor disputes, the most important issue is wages.

Xie Liangmin said that at present, there are more labor disputes in China than in coastal areas, such as Guangdong, Fujian and Zhejiang, where more and more SMEs are located in labor disputes. The reason is that the rate of labor union establishment in these areas is not high, so there are many problems in safeguarding the rights and interests of workers.
In response to these problems, the National Federation of trade unions (FTU) is also considering formulating some measures and taking corresponding measures, such as legislating to eliminate these phenomena from the sound legal system.
At the same time, Xie Liangmin said that the National Federation of trade unions is exploring the experience and practices in solving labor disputes, including setting up legal aid centers, legal mediation agencies, and legal service organizations.
